Open Letter from HPCAS

June 17, 2020

An Open Letter to the Members of Huron and Perth Counties,

We at Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society are deeply troubled and saddened by the incidences of violence perpetrated against the Black community.  The murders of George Floyd and Regis Korchinski-Paquet have ignited outrage, hurt and sadness.  Racial injustice and inequities have been part of our country, our community and our organization for far too long.  This will not be our future.

We know that anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism exists in all aspects of our lives. Racism has been known, tolerated and felt by Black and Indigenous communities for too long.  Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society recognizes that anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and all forms of racism impact the daily lives of our Board, staff, and the families we serve in ways that are unjust and prevalent.

While a statement alone is inadequate, the Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society believes that the position we hold in our community compels us to use our voice.  It is our ethical and moral responsibility to work against anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism. Statements of belief and commitment are not enough when the well-being of our organization and community demands action.

We know we need to centre the voices of all racialized groups within the organization and our community. We at Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society will continue to be accountable to all racialized groups as we make the necessary changes.

Now, we must reflect on the need for change, to check in with each other, listen to each other and live our values of equity and respect.  We need to be an environment for difficult conversations which drive change.  We understand it will be a long journey to implement change and are committed to recognize and address the systemic inequities within our organization and our community.  The Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society is committed to eradicating anti-Black racism and anti-Indigenous racism and all forms of discrimination.
