Wondering what actually happens if you call HPCAS? You're not alone – a lot of people aren't sure what to expect, and that uncertainty can be the biggest reason someone doesn't reach out at all. Let us tell you more about it.
When you call, you'll speak with a Child …and Family Well-Being worker who will listen to your concerns. They'll ask for some information, like the child's name, age and whereabouts, along with why you're concerned. It's okay if you don't have all the details. That shouldn't stop you from calling.
From there, a worker assesses the situation to figure out next steps. If a child appears to be in immediate danger, a worker may respond within 12 hours. In other situations, an initial safety assessment is completed within seven days. If you're witnessing a child in immediate danger right now, call 911 first.
Whatever the situation calls for, our approach focuses on building on a family's existing strengths and using the least disruptive course of action needed to keep kids safe.
We're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, because concerns about a child's safety don't follow a schedule.
If you're ever unsure whether to call, that uncertainty is reason enough to reach out. We'd rather talk it through with you than have you carry that worry alone.

July 14 is International Non-Binary People's Day, a day to recognize and celebrate people whose gender identity exists outside the traditional binary.
For a lot of people, simply being seen and referred to correctly can make a real difference in how safe and supported they feel in the… world.
At HPCAS, that's something we take seriously. Every child and youth we work with deserves to be known and respected for who they actually are, including their gender identity.
Today's a good day to use someone's correct pronouns, ask rather than assume, and make a little more room for people to just be themselves. 💛🤍💜🖤

July is Disability Pride Month, and this year we wanted to take a closer look at the flag that represents it.
Designed by Ann Magill in 2019 and updated in 2021, every part of this flag means something:
🖤 Black background – mourning for victims of ableist violence and abuse
… ↗️ Diagonal band – cutting across the barriers that separate disabled people from society
❤️ Red – physical disabilities
💛 Gold – neurodivergence
🤍 White – invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
💙 Blue – psychiatric disabilities
💚 Green – sensory disabilities
Together, the six colours represent how disability spans across every border and community in the world.
This month is about celebrating disability as part of human diversity, with its own culture, history and pride worth recognizing. At HPCAS, that matters to us because every child, youth and family deserves to be respected for exactly who they are, disability included.

Summer brings so many great reasons to be near water – swimming lessons, lake days, backyard pools and splash pads. It's also a good time to brush up on water safety before the season gets busy!
The reality is that most drowning incidents happen quickly and quietly, often when no one …expects it. The good news is that a few consistent habits make a real difference. Here are some important reminders.
When kids are in or around water:
– Stay within arm's reach of young children, even in shallow water
– Choose pools, beaches and splash pads with lifeguards on duty
– Never leave kids unsupervised near kiddie pools, bathtubs or buckets
– Make sure backyard pools have secure, self-closing fencing
– Have kids wear a properly fitted lifejacket when boating or near open water
A good rule: If you can't reach your child within a second, you're too far away. Supervision is the most effective tool we have to prevent water-related injuries.
A little preparation now means a safer, more enjoyable summer for the whole family!
